Thomas Ray "Paw Paw" Nelson

February 11, 1937 ~ February 11, 2018 (age 81)

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Faith Worship Center, Glencoe for Thomas Ray Nelson Sr. “Paw Paw”, 81, of Hokes Bluff who was promoted to Glory on February 11, 2018.  Rev. Mark Gidley and Rev. Mikey Nelson will officiate.  Burial will follow at Noble Hill Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home & Cemetery is in charge of the services.


Mr. Nelson was retired from the Steel Plant (Gadsden, Alabama). He was a faithful member at Faith Worship Center where he was a part of the Senior Adult Ministry.  Paw Paw was an avid sports fan especially Alabama Athletics and Atlanta Braves Baseball. He was a 1970 Lightweight Golden Gloves State Champion for Alabama.

He served his country in the United States Army for three years.  Paw Paw loved to watch his grandkids and great grandkids play sports.


He is preceded in death by his one and only true love of 59 years, Annette, loving sons; Timmy and Richard, mother; Nellie and father; Richard Paul along with sisters; Florence, Faye, and Linda as well as his brothers; Richard Jr. and Gordon. 


He is survived by his sons; Tom (Brenda) Nelson, Michael (Sandy) Nelson and daughter; Renee` (Dennis) Maddox. Grandchildren; Joel (Sara) Nelson, Irene (Brandon) Brookshire, Mikey Nelson (Cass Green), Amber (Chirs) Colvard, Leeann Nelson, Chasity (Coby)Thornton, Tabitha Maddox, Nathan Maddox, and chosen granddaughter; Mallory Shrodes along with 15 great grandchildren whom he loved dearly; brother: Robert Nelson; sister: Edna (Randy) Patterson; host of nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers will be his nephews and friends.


Special thanks to Doctors Cox and Hayes of St. Vincent’s Birmingham as well as Marcellus and Latoya on 3rd floor at Riverview Regional.


The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to time of service Tuesday at the church.
