Philip was born in Birmingham, AL. on March 9, 1957 and lived most of his life in Gadsden. He attended Eura Brown Elementary, Disque Jr. High and Gadsden High School. He enjoyed sports and played basketball during his school years. He especially loved watching Alabama football and the NBA.
He was a master automotive mechanic, taught at a young age by his paternal grandfather, Cowan Patterson. Before he was old enough to drive, he helped Carl Dorsett out at his garage on Rainbow Drive in the Country Club area. He worked at several body shops, was the proprietor of one in Pensacola, Florida and enjoyed working with Jemison Motorsports, Inc. for Nascar.
Phil also studied telecommunications at the Alabama Technical College and in 1983 was tapped by Northern Telecom to work for Citibank in NYC. He also played basketball on Northern Telecom’s team while he was there. Although he loved cars best, Phil was a mechanical genius and could fix just about anything, and there wasn’t a dog he would not rescue.
