Mary Jane Whorton


Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Monday December 17, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff, for Mary Jane Whorton, age 91, of Hokes Bluff, Al. 35903, who passed away on December 13, 2018.  Rev. Charles Smith, Rev. Baker Hill, & Dr. Ryan Morris   will officiate.  Burial will follow at Forrest Cemetery.  Glencoe- Hokes Bluff Funeral Home and Cemetery is in charge of services.


Mary Jane Whorton was born in Gadsden May 18, 1927.  Her parents were George Seaborn and Mary Jane (Jennie) Griffin Whorton.  She was a graduate of Hokes Bluff High School, Blue Mountain College in Mississippi, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth Texas, and George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee.  She was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1953 to serve in Nigeria, West Africa.  After 37 years of foreign Missionary service she retired in 1990.  In Nigeria, she taught Nigerian students, Missionary’s children (MK’S) and Nigerian pastors.  She worked in the offices of Nigerian Baptist Convention and also served with the leper colony called Promised Land.  After retirement she worked with International students at Gadsden State College and served on committees at First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff and Etowah Baptist Association.  She enjoyed sharing her home with family and friends.


She is survived by her adopted daughter: Olaitan “Felicia” Omani; sister-in-law: Carolyn Whorton of Jacksonville, Florida, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and her Nigerian and Missionary families.


She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters-in-law James and Marnie Whorton, Mack (Quida) Whorton, Ralph (Miriam) Whorton, Judson Whorton and special aunt, Fannie Lou Griffin.


Pallbearers will be her nephews.


Special thanks to her sisters in Christ, Sue Barnes Clayton and Mary Barnes Marbut, also Mary Jane’s caregivers, Angie Currie, Scarlet Latham, Brenda Garrett, Sharon Wagner and Debbie Blackerby.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff Lottie Moon Christmas offering, 5052 Main St. Hokes Bluff, Al. 35903 or World Song Missions Place 1200 Worldsong Rd. Cook Springs, Al. 35052


The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff Monday from 10 am to 11 am.
