Jim D. Brookes
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday, October 7, 2018 at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Jim D. Brookes, age, 76, of Hokes Bluff, who passed away on October 5, 2018 after an extended illness. Brother Tommy Alford will officiate. Burial will follow at Crestwood Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home and Cemetery is in charge of services.
Mr. Brookes was a lifelong resident of Etowah County and a member of St. James Catholic Church. Mr. Brookes was a graduate of Gadsden High School and Jacksonville State University, where he earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology and Physical Education. In high school and college, he was a standout athlete in football, track, and wrestling.
After graduation, Mr. Brookes became an Executive Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Physical Director for the Gadsden YMCA before becoming a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Alabama. He worked with the blind and visually-impaired, and retired after 30 years of service. In his retirement years, Mr. Brookes enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, caring for his cats, and feeding birds. He was a loyal fan of both the University of Alabama’s football team and the Atlanta Braves.
Mr. Brookes is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy Brookes, daughters: Lori Brookes, Mary (T.J.) Alford, and Jill Brookes all of Hokes Bluff, AL; sister: Marie (Bill) Downer of Carrollton, GA; brother: John (Carol) Brookes of Marietta, GA; dear brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Brookes’s honor to the Gadsden-Etowah Habitat for Humanity.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 12:30-2 pm.
