Gary D. “Detroit” Burnette
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday February 17, 2018 at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Gary D. “Detroit” Burnette, age, 71, of Glencoe, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday February 14, 2018. Pastor Ray Morris and Daniel Harrelson will officiate. Burial will follow at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home and Cemetery is in charge of services.
Gary was a Deacon at 49th Street Baptist Church in Saks, Alabama. He was retired from General Motors, Pontiac, Michigan. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff from 1996-2002 for Etowah County. He loved classic muscle cars. He served in 1968 and 1969 in the U.S. Army, Vietnam service-82nd Air Borne and 3rd Brigade. He had a heart for Missionaries and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved his family which was his greatest joy. He graduated from Jacksonville Police Academy on July 24, 1998. He loved camping.
He was preceded in death by his father; Don Burnette and mother; Lois Elizabeth Burnette.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Janice, children; Shelly (Ben) Cook, Kelly (Tim) Fowler and Rebecca (Daniel) Harrelson, grandchildren; Ryan Douglas Sweeten, Brianne King, Brooke Fowler, Mitchell Cook, Philip Harrelson and Julia Harrelson, brother; Eddie (Janet) Burnette, sister; Donette Stuart, brother-in-laws; Mike Saint, Doug Saint and David Saint, sister-in-law; Betty (Jeff) Ayers and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandsons; Ryan Sweeten, Mitchell Cook, Philip Harrelson, sons-in-law: Ben Cook, Daniel Harrelson and Tim Fowler.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Etowah County Sheriffs and Honor Guard.
Special thanks to family, church family, Hospice and to all families who prayed for him.
Flowers will be accepted or donations made to 49th St Baptist church Missions.
Family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home from 12 to 2 PM.
