Philip W. Kellen, age 79, of Centre, AL, and formerly Marshfield, MA, departed this life peacefully on July 26th after declining health and a recent diagnosis of cancer.

Born on November 9, 1938, in Chicago, IL, he attended Northwestern University and later served four years in the US Coast Guard as a communications engineer. He was employed as a regional sales manager with Damon IEC for over 25 years. While in Massachusetts, he was active as a leader in the Boy Scouts where he received the Order of the Arrow, attended St. Christine’s Catholic Church, and worked as an independent design consultant. After moving to Alabama, he designed and built his dream house on Weiss Lake, was an active member of the Lions Club, the National Model Railroad Association, and a founding member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Mission in Centre, AL.

Phil was an Eagle Scout , a jack of all trades, a wealth of knowledge on all subjects, a staunch supporter of three rival college football teams and a true Southerner born in a Northerner's body. He has traveled the world, been to every state and almost every country; truly, there is at least one person in each of those places that has heard one of Phil’s stories.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Dorothy Ryan Kellen of Chicago, IL. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Kay Cleaves Kellen of Centre, AL; three children, Heidi Kellen Simmons of Marshfield, MA; Peter (Ingrid) Kellen of Homewood, AL; and, Mark (Peggy) Kellen of Valley Glen, CA. He is also survived and cherished by six grandchildren: Andrew Simmons (20), Heather Simmons (18); Gretchen Kellen(15), Ulrika Kellen(13), Liesel Kellen(10); and, Rebecca Kellen(2).

Visitation will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Mission in Centre, AL, on Wednesday, August 2nd from 10-11:30am, Rosary 11:30-noon, Memorial Mass at noon. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Michael’s Building Fund, the Lions Club of Centre, or the Boy Scouts of America.
