Hale, Millard March 15, 1920 – Feb. 20, 2018
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb 24 at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Chapel. Visitation is from 6-8pm on Friday and 10am–12pm on Saturday for Millard Hale, 97, of Glencoe. Millard went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Feb. 20, surrounded by his family. He was known as “PopPop” not only to his grand and great-grandchildren but to all who loved him. Funeral service will be officiated by Revs. Larry Fuhrman and Anthony Gomez. Special music by Denise Higginbotham.
Millard was born in Phil Campbell, Alabama on March 15, 1920, to S. T. and Amanda Hale, but he considered Heflin his home. Millard grew up in a farming family and drove a school bus while attending Ohatchee High School. He joined the Army in January 1942 where he was a gunner and driver in an M7 tank. He was in the “Lucky 7” part of the 7th Armored Division under General Patton. He landed on Omaha Beach in August of that year where he fought in seven major military campaigns which included the Battle of the Budge, the Battle of the Ardennes Forest and St. Vith. He was awarded the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Four Bronze Stars and inducted into the Patriot’s Hall of Honor in Gadsden.
After the war, he moved to Gadsden and went to work at Goodyear where he met and married his wife of 69 years, Mildred McElroy. Together they created a Christian home to raise their five children and became a part of the Glencoe community. Millard is survived by his children David(Linda) of San Diego, CA, Becky (Mike) of Huntsville, AL, Mike (Diane) of Plano, TX, Larry (Mary) and Gina (Billy) Talbot of Glencoe: 14 Grandchildren, Shane(Brandi), Tara (Ryan), Erin (Grant), Garrett (Kimmy), Brooke(Chris), Matthew (Deanna), Ryan (Teri), Meghan (Tyler), Blake, Dr. Kristin (Taylor Cash), Logan, Taylor (Kristen), Morgan (Graeme) and Evan (Devan); 15 Great-grandchildren, Remy, Troy, Sawyer, Isla, Jake, Ryder, Annsley, Kade, Dylan, Gram, Rhett, Mia, Katy, Cohen and Emory. Sisters Lois Murray and Peggy Young(Harold), sisters-in-law Dot Hale, Lillian Smith, Georgia McElroy, Irene Harper, and Lee McElroy. Chosen grandson, Grayson Kellett; and special neighbors Steven Kellett, Cassie Kellett, Laura and Mike McKenzie, Casey and Ben Lackey, Don Richey, and Steve Moore.
He was preceded in death by his loving Wife Mildred Hale, Parents: S.T. and Amanda Hale, Brothers: Nelson, Ivan, Bill and Gene, Sisters: Dorothy Hale, Jo Phillips, and Nell Nelson and granddaughter, Ashley Lambert.
Millard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who gave of himself to his family and friends. PopPop was known for his love of his church, family, and community. He loved to work in the garden and repair old lawnmowers and clocks. He was a member of First Baptist Church Glencoe for 65 years where he served in many positions but was best known for being the first one at church and opening the doors for all who wanted to come in. He was an active member of the Hokes Bluff Masonic Lodge and VFW Post 10408.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Taylor Cash and Stephen Kellett.
