Funeral Services will be 12 PM, October 14, 2017 at Damascus Baptist Church, 547 Tyler Street, Gadsden, AL 35901 for Annie Lee Russell   Age: 77 of Sylacauga, Alabama who passed away on October 6, 2017. Pastor Timothy Madden will officiate. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

Ms. Annie L. Russell was born in Sylacauga, AL on January 9, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Russell Sr and Rosie L. Russell.

Along with her parents the family moved to Gadsden, Al where she had to drop out of school to take care of her father while her mother worked to support the family until his death. She left Alabama at age 17 and moved to New York where she worked various jobs between New York and Rhode Island before returning to Alabama years later.

She left Alabama again this time with her son only Months old and moved to Dallas, Texas. After about four years, she moved to Harrisburg, PA where she was hired as a waitress and even though she had little education the determination of this little 4 ft. 11 in woman ascended her to be restaurant manager and eventually to one of the first black department store managers at FW Woolworth Cooperation. She held her position until she developed heart problems that restricted her from working the position.

She was a praying woman and no matter how bad things got her faith never wavered. She always cared more for others than herself. Her heart problems got worse where she had open heart surgery in 1986, where she was given a 50% chance of survival. She had the surgery and she said all she wanted to do before she passed was see her grandson born. She survived the surgery and took care of her mother until her death in 1993.

She moved to Emma Sansom Projects and became very involved with tenant relations. She started youth groups and a choir consisting of her three grandchildren and neighborhood children to go to nursing homes and visit the sick and shut in. She started a flower fund. She continued these activities until her health declined and she could no longer do it.

Despite her sickness this courageous little woman lived an additional 25 years and was able to not only see her 3 grandchildren but 12 great-grandchildren as well.

She is preceded in death by: Her four siblings Joseph Russell Jr, Lonnie E. Russell, Blufus Russell, and Ada L. Freedman.

She leaves to cherish her memories her only son, Walter Anthony Russell, God daughter;  Portia Chivers,  three grandchildren, Anthony Lashawn Hope, Shantell Lynette Hope, and Nikea Marie Dawkins. As well as 12 great grandchildren, Issiah M. Parker, Jada S. Parker, Jeremiah Parker, Tranecia D. Hope, Lillie G. Hope, Sofia Hope, Elisarai O. Dawkins, Kheara A. Dawkins, Syriana J. Heard, Meikya S. Dawkins, Katherine N. Dawkins, Michael L. Dawkins Jr. As well as, her best friend Mrs. Addie May Norman.
