Alan C. Hayes died peacefully on Jan. 16, 2018, surrounded by his family after an extended illness. He was born on Feb. 26, 1938, in Talladega, Ala., to Ernest Lafayette and Sarah Camp Hayes.
Alan was a 1956 graduate of Hokes Bluff High School, where he was valedictorian. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 42 years and was active in the USW Local 12, where he held multiple positions. He was an avid Alabama fan, reader and historian.
He is preceded in death by his parents, E. L. and Sarah Hayes; brothers, Ernie, Sheriff James, Robert and Sammy Hayes; nephews, Jacob and Sammy Dale Hayes; sister-in-law, Irene Hayes and brothers-in-law, John Bussey and Gerald Green.
Alan is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty; daughter, Sue (Russell) Pettus; sons, Keith (Miki) and Paul Hayes; grandchildren, Blake and Morgan and his "Little Buddy," his great grandson, Isaiah. He is also survived by his brothers, Don, David (Valerie) and Johnny (Donna) Hayes; sisters, Janis Bussey, Mary Green, Deborah (Ronald) Rochester, Lynn (Gary) Williams; sisters-in-law, Diane Duncan Hayes and Diane Hill Hayes; aunts, Margaret Hubbard and Martha "Mott" (Vineyard) Williams; a host of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
The family will receive family and friends from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Chapel.
